Compatibility with other software
In order to create the complex geometries that have become a feature of its award-winning structures, Price & Myers 3D Engineering uses SolidWorks to bring out the best from a range of other software packages. “Using different software programs to complement each other helps us to achieve outstanding results,” says founding partner, Tim Lucas.

Working within the architectural environment, Lucas and his team generally present information as 2D drawings. For consistency, these are presented in AutoCAD, transferred from 3D models created in SolidWorks. “SolidWorks does all the complex modelling and AutoCAD brings out the best in these models as two dimensional images,” explains Lucas. “We also export solid models from SolidWorks to other systems for use by subcontractors or fabricators.”

Price & Myers 3D Engineering has recently invested in 3D Plus. “We found that we can’t use it to create curved surfaces,” says Lucas. “So we use SolidWorks to create the complex geometry and then export that data into 3D Plus to draw the beams and other structural features. We have found this actually enables 3D Plus to do more that it has perhaps been designed for. In this way the two solutions complement each other very well.”
