Transfer of data to subcontractors and fabricators
Price & Myers 3D Engineering uses SolidWorks to ensure the accurate transfer of engineering data to subcontractors and fabricators. “We’re often involved in complex installations,” explains founding partner, Tim Lucas, “which can easily go wrong unless everyone is working from the same accurate and reliable data.”

During a recent project to create a set of 15 metre high angel wings in London, Lucas and his team needed to pass on information to subcontractors about the jigs they had designed to ensure the smooth installation of the wings. “On installation day, the wings would be in four separate sections that needed to be brought together on site,” says Lucas. “We modelled the jigs in SolidWorks to simulate the exact orientation of each section as it was being made and the connection points between them.”

The team then exported this data as a solid model into AutoCAD for use by the jig manufacturers. “There was no room for error on this project, and we could be confident the jigs would work on the day because the subcontractors were using accurate dimensions,” says Lucas. When the day of installation finally arrived, the jigs held the wings in exactly the right position, ensuring the smooth assembly Lucas had hoped for.
